Anthony Ruby’s recent practice consists of a developing body of paintings that are based on the idea of consuming and being consumed.  The paintings reference humanity’s role in the deterioration of our environment. The relentless pursuit of product production, the release of emissions, discarding and pollution has resulted in environments of waste that are ultimately consuming the natural world. These works depict both human and animal forms, sometimes fractured, sometimes fused and they explore how humans and animals are interwoven into this tangled existence.  Greek mythology and folklore are at times referenced and re-contextualised as visual narratives on contemporary social challenges.

The thematic threads that run through these works weave themselves into ideas based on humanity consumed by racism, ideologies of hate and biblioclasm. They touch on the troubling rise of extreme nationalism and anti-immigration sentiment, as well as  geopolitical land-grabbing and war-mongering.

These paintings tap into being consumed by possession, grabbing and owning. They try to visualise the littered debris, the chaos and the entangled environments we find ourselves in.

These works present potential narratives on the chaos of life, on environmental deterioration and survival, they visualise aggression and hatred and they explore and articulate feelings of dismay and existential questioning.
